So-called discriminatory Queensland: Wake up Kiwis, Australia owes you nothing

Terry Wallbank's picture

This post is in reply to Ben Heather’s article ‘Anti-Kiwi’ law slated by Aussie commission’ on Stuff this morning. The article suggests that a bill if passed by the Queensland Government would discriminate against New Zealanders based on their temporary, visa status; it suggests that New Zealanders would be denied access to state housing, welfare, and disability support, etc.

In part, this is what Ben Heather wrote:

“'Anti-Kiwi' law slated by Aussie commission

Queensland's anti-discrimination commission has condemned plans to legalise state discrimination against New Zealanders, claiming it would create a "permanent second class of people".

The commission said denying access to state support based on nationality could lead to increased crime, suicide and homelessness.

The tens of thousands of New Zealanders who were allowed to live and work in Queensland indefinitely on "temporary" visas were particularly vulnerable, the commission said.

"Widespread denial of certain government services to long-term residents of Queensland may create a permanent second class of people."

The commission also urged better access to permanent residency for Kiwis living long term in Australia.

"There is an emergence of an economically disadvantaged group of New Zealand citizens living in Australia who do not have a clear pathway to either permanent residency or Australian citizenship."

The comments were made in response to a Queensland Government bill that, if passed, would allow government agencies to deny support based on residency status without it being considered discriminatory.

This would affect all New Zealanders living "temporarily" in Queensland, who are already refused access to welfare, public housing and disability support. Without the threat of legal action, it would also be easier to expand restrictions on New Zealanders.”

The problem I have with this is the fact that Australia doesn’t owe Kiwis anything. Where do Kiwis get the idea that they can go to a foreign country and expect welfare? Kiwis are privileged as it is just being able to work there, let alone get welfare. But no, spoon fed Kiwis brainwashed by New Zealand’s left-wing, welfare state must cry ‘discrimination.’ Have they not considered for a moment that New Zealand’s over taxed, welfare state is what has driven them to Australia in the first place; have they not considered that discrimination can be a good thing?

First and foremost, the Queensland Government’s duty is to be responsible to its citizens, and keeping taxes low for its citizens is a good thing. If temporary workers don’t like it, they can always go home, but they don’t, do they? They stay there because they know it’s still better working there than in New Zealand. New Zealanders need to grasp the concept that the only reason Australia has them working there is because there is a profit in it, and if the jobs go, so do they.

Even though John Key voices his concerns over this so-called discrimination, he knows he can’t do anything because if it weren’t for Australia New Zealand’s unemployment would probably be higher than 10% at this present point in time.

A few decades ago New Zealanders were raised to believe ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ In other words, abide by the customs and laws of the host nation; what ever happened to that? It is time for Kiwis to wake up and be grateful that Australia is our neighbour, and not China.

I was disgusted to hear that guy Heather whining about the Qld govt - it doesn't owe him anything. He just makes Queenslanders dislike NZers - and I don't blame them.

Well said, Terry. We have no "right" to any assistance over there. I found that out earlier this year when I was out of work for 9 months, but that's another story.

The easy option for kiwis who migrate permanently is to take Permanent Residence and then, once they've established themselves, Citizenship. Then they get all of the rights and responsibilities that go with Australian Citizenship. But that all sounds too hard, doesn't it. Far better to have a whinge to some reporter. It's a perfect example of the mindset of all too many kiwis, who believe there's no problem in life either too big or too small for a government programme to solve.

Couldn't agree more. As NZ'r who has spent some time in Queensland it was really tempting to stay but family ties are strong. Unfortunately, we seem to be breeding a generation of Kiwis who think the Govt has an endless supply of money which of course it hasn't; it only has the power to take it off one person and give to another.

M. Faulkner, spread the wealth around seems to be the norm these days, but how dare we challenge that concept?
